Description

Stained glass has a rich history that dates back over a thousand years. It has been used to inspire everything from fashion to architecture—and now cakes! These sweet designs celebrate bright colors while still alluding that light is shining though, and they are perfect for any occasion. Head into the kitchen with cake designer Rachael Teufel as she encourages you to pull inspiration from the world around you and look at all different mediums of art and design.

Rachael starts this Premium lesson by demonstrating how to freehand a beautiful tulip design complete with stems and leaves atop a fondant cake. She recognizes that everyone’s skill sets are different and encourages you to play to your own strengths. If you do not feel comfortable freehanding designs, she shares valuable pointers on utilizing inspirational pieces or even copying an exact piece of art onto your cake.

After the design is etched into the cake, Rachael shares her knowledge on the different types of edible paints available and recommends her favorite to create a transparent and realistic look. Included are tips and tricks on diluting colors, stabilizing your hand to avoiding indentations, selecting the proper paint brush for each section, and creating colors with similar tones.

Lastly, Rachael discusses different options for creating the black soldering lines found on stained-glass windows and demonstrates her preferred way to create clean and crisp black lines. Also included are pointers on adding in lines to create more visual interest and depth, removing smudges, and adjusting designs to cover up errors. Many of these same techniques taught in the Stained-Glass Cake lesson can also be applied to create gorgeous watercolor cakes.
