Not sure what to do with that leftover royal icing after decorating your cookies? Cookie expert Maddie Gartmann shows you just how easy it is to store your royal icing so nothing goes to waste!

Use the helpful “2-2-2” rule for storing royal icing:

– Store for 2 days at room temperature
– Store for 2 weeks in the refrigerator
– Store for 2 months in the freezer

If storing your royal icing right out of the mixing bowl, Maddie recommends transferring the icing into a glass container for storage. However, you can also store your royal icing right in the piping bags! Simply tape the tip of each bag closed to prevent your icing from leaking or drying while being stored. For long-term storage, piping bags can be frozen in a freezer bag. When it’s time to use icing that’s been stored in the freezer, simply take them out and allow them to defrost at room temperature.

Hi, I'm Maddy Gartmann and today we're going to talk about storing your royal icing. After you've finished making your icing, there's a couple ways you can store it. I go by the two, two, two rule, which means it can stay at room temperature for two days, in the refrigerator for two weeks, or in the freezer for two months or even a little more than that. The best way to store it if you're storing it fresh out of the mixing bowl is to put it in some glass Tupperware, just like this. And like I said, this can stay at room temperature for two days and you can still use it just fine, pop it in the refrigerator for two weeks, or put it in the freezer for two months. This is if you're storing it directly out of the bowl. Next, if you're going to store your royal icing after you've already colored it and bagged it, all you have to do is keep them in the bags, but you're going to want to make sure that they don't leak. So I use a little bit of scotch tape, seal them shut so that they don't leak in your bag, grab a freezer bag and get them all inside. Again, these can store for up to two months in your freezer. When you're ready to use them again, simply take them out, wait for them to come to room temperature, and you're ready to go.
